JDT Helps Patient Get His Life Back

Mario Winston lived a relatively stress free life. He ate well and led an active and healthy lifestyle which included daily walks and weekly bike rides. But a year ago at the age of 47, his life changed drastically. Winston suffered a stroke. This is far from uncommon. Over 800,000 people in the U.S. each year fall victim to strokes according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, someone in the U.S. has a stroke every 40 seconds and every 4 minutes someone dies as a result.

"I fell down, I couldn't talk, I had no arm movement and no memory," recalls Winston. Still he considers himself one of the lucky ones. After being rushed to Morristown Memorial Hospital for treatment, Winston recovered enough to be sent to the Jerry & Dolores Turco Medical Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln Park, NJ. He didn't choose the facility nor had he even heard of it but was sent there as a referral from Morristown Memorial. Winston could not walk when he arrived at JDT. He couldn't talk and had no movement on his right side.

A stroke occurs when blood vessels in the brain burst or when a clot blocks the blood supply to the brain, experts say. Serious long-term disabilities are often the result. As in Winston's case, the stroke did cause significant problems, including speech difficulties, memory loss and paralysis. The brain's ability to control muscle movements gets impaired when damage at any point occurs along the chain of nerve cells that run from the brain down through the spinal cord. Winston could not move his arm due to paralysis even though his brain was telling his muscles to do so. Occupational therapist, Jodi Berg, introduced Winston to a relatively new interactive rehabilitation therapy utilizing JDT's high technology: the InMotion 2.0 Shoulder/Arm Robot. Winston admits that he was apprehensive about the robot's ability to help him to regain movement.

The robotic assisted therapy, designed by Interactive Motion Technologies, gives patients with motor disabilities the opportunity to be more proactive in their recovery by challenging them to interact with several games designed to increase both motor and visual functions. With reluctance, Winston agreed to give the InMotion Robot a try. His right shoulder was strapped snuggly into a supportive device and he was given a joystick to operate a cursor that appeared on a computer screen. His task was to follow the leader in a dot catcher game with the goal of moving the cursor from one portion of a circle to another. The robot assisted him through a series of high repetitions. "I could feel my arm starting to move...after 2 months the movements were on my own," declared Winston.

The dot catcher game helps patients like Winston regain normal arm and shoulder motions which are smooth and fluid rather than jerky synergistic movements which the brain does to compensate for the lack of motor skills. Winston continued to make significant improvements during his 6 month rehabilitation therapy at JDT. "The robot therapy did speed up my recovery...I would say it made it at least 6 times faster," recalls Winston. "I think anyone who tries it even once will realize it works."

Today, Winston lives unassisted and walks with a cane. He expresses his gratitude to Cody and Lacy (physical therapists at JDT) who helped him walk again. He has 40% of the movement back in his right side and can raise his right hand halfway to his face. He can move his right shoulder up and down and from front to back. Although Winston can't drive, he had pride in his voice when he stated that he completed the last of his outpatient therapy. "I have almost half my life back now," said Winston, "and I'm happy that my treatment was so good."

Patient Satisfaction Surveys Serve As Important Tools To Measure The Quality Of Care At JDT 

We Care.... And It Shows    These words are the guiding principles of the Jerry & Dolores Turco (JDT) Medical Rehab Center.

Caring is the central mission at JDT and the driving force behind the 60 bed state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility.  JDT is the facility of choice for patients looking for a unique environment to heal in with exceptional rehabilitation services.   Patient Satisfaction Surveys are a critical tool for assessing the quality of care and services offered at JDT.  The satisfaction of our patients is a key indicator of how well JDT meets its rehabilitation expectations and needs.  

JDT measures Patient Satisfaction by asking patients to fill out Patient Surveys about the care and experience they received while at JDT.  Patient satisfaction is measured in the following areas:

-Quality of Nursing Staff & Therapy

-Timeliness of Services, Medical Care & Other Needs

-Professionalism & Helpfulness of Staff

-Cleanliness of Rooms, Hall & Public Areas

-Activities, Grounds & Overall Aesthetics

-Likeliness to Recommend to Others

Each completed survey is reviewed by staff and management at all levels.  All data is collected and compiled in a bar graph reflecting 100% Patient Satisfaction in all 6 areas listed above.  Although each of the areas are important, the willingness to recommend JDT Medical Rehab to friends or relatives is the most significant indicator of the quality of JDT's programs and services.  On a scale from 1 to 10, patients circled 10 and even wrote in 11 when asked how likely they would be to recommend our facility to others.   Additional comments about what they liked most included:  "The environment, the people, it didn't seem like a hospital, I felt at home," "I made great improvements with the physical therapists,"   "Everyone was very good to me,"  "At 99 years of age I had a lot of fun here, and I will miss everyone."  

The information gathered by Patient Satisfaction Surveys is invaluable to JDT as they continually strive to improve patient recovery time as well as the overall patient experience at JDT Medical Rehab.

New Technology Treatment Therapy - "The Amazing InMotion Shoulder/Arm Robot"

JDT is committed to providing patients with the most effective therapy to speed up recovery time for stroke victims and multiple sclerosis (MS) sufferers.  The robotic device is designed to help patients with motor disabilities by the use of repetition exercises combined with a visual interface.  Patients operate a joystick that controls an onscreen cursor which interacts with several games designed to increase motor and visual functions of patients.

The device focuses on helping the patient correct non-fluid motions that the brain does to compensate for the lack of motor skills.  The therapy is not only effective but is made to be interesting and fun.

Patients will experience the following:

• A maze game where patients guide the cursor through a series of mazes.
• Follow-the-leader dot catcher where patients move the cursor to connect one portion of a circle with another.
• Pseudo-paint program where patients can make art through the movements of the cursor.

The robotic device assists patients throughout each activity and all data is recorded to monitor progress.  JDT plans on adding an accessory that will allow additional hand and shoulder therapy.

Doctors and therapists know that moderate physical activity can improve your health without hurting your joints. The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is an exercise program designed specifically for people with arthritis that uses gentle activities to

- help increase joint flexibility and range of motion

- help maintain muscle strength.

Different classes are available to fit your fitness level – with exercises done while sitting, standing or on the floor.

Class instructors undergo special Arthritis Foundation instructor-training workshop conduct classes. The exercises you learn in the program, however, should not replace therapeutic exercises prescribed for you by a therapist.

Participants previously enrolled in the program have experienced such benefits as increased functional ability, increased self-care behaviors, decreased pain and decreased depression.

The care that was provided to me was beyond my expectations, both in nursing and rehabilitation. The ability to access the internet from my room was a big benefit to me since I do almost everything on the computer and needed internet connectivity.

On the third floor the personal attention I received by the Nursing Staff and the Aids were extraordinary and the PT and OT staff made the rehabilitation process enjoyable. Of particular note in the area of PT and OT, I appreciate the overall efforts of Jody and Carla. Their dedication to my recovery was beyond what I expected. The personal attention I received from the nursing staff was also very personalized and I want to recognize the efforts of Walter, Rachel and the aids Alice, Nancy, Anna and Yolanda.

LINCOLN PARK — The Jerry & Dolores Turco (JDT) Center, an "East meets West" medical rehabilitation center designed to take care of sub-acute and out-patient therapy, received its first patients after officially opening on June 23, but how is this facility coping with its first patients' needs three months later?

Jim Parker, a resident of the Pompton Plains section of Pequannock, is very satisfied so far with the overall treatment he has been receiving at the JDT Center.

Parker, who is suffering from adult onset diabetes, previously had his left leg amputated and is currently in the JDT center recovering from an arterial bypass in his right leg.

"The JDT center is like a vacation for me," Parker said. "It's like being on a cruise ship, with the friendly atmosphere and people who give you anything you want to make you happy."

After his surgery at Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains, Parker said a social worker at the hospital recommended the JDT center for his sub-acute therapy.

"I previously was at the Renaissance Rehab & Nursing Center next door for sub-acute therapy in the past, so I was familiar with the campus," Parker said.

With the help from the Assistant Director of Rehabilitation, Jerome Lesaca, Parker said his therapy has been helping him regain his strength and gaining mobility again. Parker was confined to a wheelchair before his arrival at the JDT center, and through Lesaca's regimented program of step exercises, treadmill, and balance exercises, Parker has gained the ability to stand and walk around on his own.

"This is the first place I've been at that succeeded in helping me walk again," Parker said.

Grace Beardsmore of Clifton has also been satisfied with her therapy at the JDT center. Beardsmore, who was one of the first patients to arrive in the facility, is anticipating leaving on Sept. 12 after a hip and foot surgery at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville.

"The service has been terrific, and I couldn't ask for anything more," Beardsmore said.

One of the things Beardsmore highlighted was the fact that in her private room, which is one of the main features of the JDT Center, she was able to bring in little things to make her life easier at the center, like her cinnamon to add to her cereal. In addition, she is able to walk around the facility freely to receive some exercise, and is able to congregate in the living room with other patients.

She said she found out about the JDT center from her daughter, who was passing by the area and saw that it was open. Beardsmore said that since her admission to the JDT center, it has been catering to healing her "mind, body and soul," and secretly laments that her therapy would be longer so she could stay at the facility a bit more.


The future of JDT

In an interview with Mimi Feliciano, the owner of the Lincoln Park HealthCare Experience organization, which the JDT center is a part of, she said that the JDT Center currently has around 35 of the 60 rooms occupied, with 15 discharges from a successful stays.

"Several patients left earlier than expected," Feliciano said. "That is our ultimate goal in the JDT Center: to get the patients healthier as soon as possible."

In the future, Feliciano said the facility would be encompassing educational classes on various conditions like Arthritis, where a doctor would come in and explain to the community how to cope with these conditions, and various ways to prevent these conditions.

Feliciano also said that talks with several prominent health care centers in New York City are paying off, with a referral from Mount Sinai in Manhattan to attending the JDT Center for sub-acute therapy.

"Our operational awareness campaign is creating a bit of a buzz in the medical community," Feliciano said.

One looming concern is the current health care reform debate going on in the federal government, and how this could affect her business. Currently, the JDT center is generating a portion of its revenue through both Medicare and Medicaid.

"I don't know which way the government will go with the health care debate, but I noticed there was a 0 percent increase on Medicaid costs, and I'm unsure if that would be applied to Medicare soon," Feliciano said. "But I'm confident that if you make a product that is highly desirable, then people will come to find you."

Feliciano said that because the Lincoln Park Healthcare Experience is a very large and well known facility in the region, it becomes a matter of "economy of scale," and anticipates the business will run efficiently regardless of what decisions the government makes, even if it has an adverse effect on her business or not.

And her strategy at the moment is based on expansion. The JDT Center is still in the process of hiring employees, and is currently looking for nurses, including certified nurses aides, specialists, and any nurses with previous hospital or sub-acute experience. In addition, the JDT Center is looking for customer service representatives that would act as concierges or non-medical caretakers, and a few managerial positions. In all, Feliciano said there are around 30 positions still available.

"I feel blessed that I have the opportunity to undergo projects like this," Feliciano said.

With the completion of the JDT Center, the Lincoln Park Healthcare Experience complex, which includes the Lincoln Park Care Center, Renaissance Rehab & Nursing Center, and Hospice, has around 706 beds, making it one of the largest healthcare complexes in New Jersey.

Meet Toni Loyas OTR

In the early 17th century, William Shakespeare wrote a play, Twelfth Night, in which its first lines echoed “If music be the food of love, play on.” These words mean much to an employee of the Lincoln Park Health Care Experience.

Meet Toni Loyas. Several years ago one of her closest friends suffered injuries from a severe car accident. This event inspired Toni to become passionate about rehabilitation therapy and use her passions to reach her patients. Music is Toni’s passion and feels that her passion crosses over into rehab. By understanding her passion for music and the events that transpired several years ago, Toni is able reach out to her patients to find their passions and interest to motivate and aid in their success.

Today, she is the Corporate Rehabilitation Director at Lincoln Park Health Care. Toni is a certified occupational therapist who oversees all rehabilitation departments including Reimbursement, Clinical, and Quality. Toni received her Bachelor of Science from Kean University and has 11 years of professional experience.

While at Lincoln Park Care Center, Toni has noticed that this is not your typical healthcare experience, rather it is a new cutting edge type of healthcare experience that she is proud to be a part of. Her advice to fellow colleagues is to “embrace co-workers and you will be in a strong work environment to grow and retire in.” Play on Toni. Play on.

The building features a Japanese healing meditation garden, English garden terrace, private suites, Rehab Road, a simulated neighborhood community, indoor aquatherapy pool, day spa, wellness center and more.

The 65,000 sq. ft. Jerry & Dolores Turco Medical Rehab Center features both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. Specialty programs include orthopedic rehabilitation, stroke rehabilitation and pulmonary rehabilitation.
