LINCOLN PARK — The Jerry & Dolores Turco (JDT) Center, an "East meets West" medical rehabilitation center designed to take care of sub-acute and out-patient therapy, received its first patients after officially opening on June 23, but how is this facility coping with its first patients' needs three months later?

Jim Parker, a resident of the Pompton Plains section of Pequannock, is very satisfied so far with the overall treatment he has been receiving at the JDT Center.

Parker, who is suffering from adult onset diabetes, previously had his left leg amputated and is currently in the JDT center recovering from an arterial bypass in his right leg.

"The JDT center is like a vacation for me," Parker said. "It's like being on a cruise ship, with the friendly atmosphere and people who give you anything you want to make you happy."

After his surgery at Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains, Parker said a social worker at the hospital recommended the JDT center for his sub-acute therapy.

"I previously was at the Renaissance Rehab & Nursing Center next door for sub-acute therapy in the past, so I was familiar with the campus," Parker said.

With the help from the Assistant Director of Rehabilitation, Jerome Lesaca, Parker said his therapy has been helping him regain his strength and gaining mobility again. Parker was confined to a wheelchair before his arrival at the JDT center, and through Lesaca's regimented program of step exercises, treadmill, and balance exercises, Parker has gained the ability to stand and walk around on his own.

"This is the first place I've been at that succeeded in helping me walk again," Parker said.

Grace Beardsmore of Clifton has also been satisfied with her therapy at the JDT center. Beardsmore, who was one of the first patients to arrive in the facility, is anticipating leaving on Sept. 12 after a hip and foot surgery at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville.

"The service has been terrific, and I couldn't ask for anything more," Beardsmore said.

One of the things Beardsmore highlighted was the fact that in her private room, which is one of the main features of the JDT Center, she was able to bring in little things to make her life easier at the center, like her cinnamon to add to her cereal. In addition, she is able to walk around the facility freely to receive some exercise, and is able to congregate in the living room with other patients.

She said she found out about the JDT center from her daughter, who was passing by the area and saw that it was open. Beardsmore said that since her admission to the JDT center, it has been catering to healing her "mind, body and soul," and secretly laments that her therapy would be longer so she could stay at the facility a bit more.

The future of JDT

In an interview with Mimi Feliciano, the owner of the Lincoln Park HealthCare Experience organization, which the JDT center is a part of, she said that the JDT Center currently has around 35 of the 60 rooms occupied, with 15 discharges from a successful stays.

"Several patients left earlier than expected," Feliciano said. "That is our ultimate goal in the JDT Center: to get the patients healthier as soon as possible."

In the future, Feliciano said the facility would be encompassing educational classes on various conditions like Arthritis, where a doctor would come in and explain to the community how to cope with these conditions, and various ways to prevent these conditions.

Feliciano also said that talks with several prominent health care centers in New York City are paying off, with a referral from Mount Sinai in Manhattan to attending the JDT Center for sub-acute therapy.

"Our operational awareness campaign is creating a bit of a buzz in the medical community," Feliciano said.

One looming concern is the current health care reform debate going on in the federal government, and how this could affect her business. Currently, the JDT center is generating a portion of its revenue through both Medicare and Medicaid.

"I don't know which way the government will go with the health care debate, but I noticed there was a 0 percent increase on Medicaid costs, and I'm unsure if that would be applied to Medicare soon," Feliciano said. "But I'm confident that if you make a product that is highly desirable, then people will come to find you."

Feliciano said that because the Lincoln Park Healthcare Experience is a very large and well known facility in the region, it becomes a matter of "economy of scale," and anticipates the business will run efficiently regardless of what decisions the government makes, even if it has an adverse effect on her business or not.

And her strategy at the moment is based on expansion. The JDT Center is still in the process of hiring employees, and is currently looking for nurses, including certified nurses aides, specialists, and any nurses with previous hospital or sub-acute experience. In addition, the JDT Center is looking for customer service representatives that would act as concierges or non-medical caretakers, and a few managerial positions. In all, Feliciano said there are around 30 positions still available.

"I feel blessed that I have the opportunity to undergo projects like this," Feliciano said.

With the completion of the JDT Center, the Lincoln Park Healthcare Experience complex, which includes the Lincoln Park Care Center, Renaissance Rehab & Nursing Center, and Hospice, has around 706 beds, making it one of the largest healthcare complexes in New Jersey.

Meet Toni Loyas OTR

In the early 17th century, William Shakespeare wrote a play, Twelfth Night, in which its first lines echoed “If music be the food of love, play on.” These words mean much to an employee of the Lincoln Park Health Care Experience.

Meet Toni Loyas. Several years ago one of her closest friends suffered injuries from a severe car accident. This event inspired Toni to become passionate about rehabilitation therapy and use her passions to reach her patients. Music is Toni’s passion and feels that her passion crosses over into rehab. By understanding her passion for music and the events that transpired several years ago, Toni is able reach out to her patients to find their passions and interest to motivate and aid in their success.

Today, she is the Corporate Rehabilitation Director at Lincoln Park Health Care. Toni is a certified occupational therapist who oversees all rehabilitation departments including Reimbursement, Clinical, and Quality. Toni received her Bachelor of Science from Kean University and has 11 years of professional experience.

While at Lincoln Park Care Center, Toni has noticed that this is not your typical healthcare experience, rather it is a new cutting edge type of healthcare experience that she is proud to be a part of. Her advice to fellow colleagues is to “embrace co-workers and you will be in a strong work environment to grow and retire in.” Play on Toni. Play on.

JERRY & DOLORES TURCO MEDICAL REHAB CENTER OPENS TO RAVE REVIEWS

(Lincoln Park, NJ: July 15, 2009, For Immediate Release) - The Jerry & Dolores Turco Medical Rehab Center in Lincoln Park is now open and accepting patients. After months of anticipation and tours of the building by the professional and local community, the first patients have been admitted.

The facility is currently accepting new admissions as well as pre-booking for future reservations post-surgery. This enables patients to enter their surgery process knowing that arrangements for rehabilitation have already been made.

Jerry and Dolores Turco had a vision many years ago. As leaders in the healthcare and real estate industries, they originally created a facility offering quality long term care services. Eventually, several other health care facilities were added to the campus. The facilities became recognized for their innovative vision and were more recently branded as The Lincoln Park Healthcare Experience.

Mimi Feliciano, the CEO of Lincoln Park Renaissance Rehab and Nursing Center, Lincoln Park Care Center and Lincoln Park Hospice, embodies her parents vision and has taken it upon herself to continue to build on their accomplishments after both her parents passed away. A high energy, high-efficiency individual, Mimi is taking her latest project, the Jerry & Dolores Turco Medical Rehab Center, to new heights in luxury rehabilitation.

Ms. Feliciano states, "We are so excited to be open and accepting patients. We have gone to great lengths to provide rehabilitation in a setting that is like nothing the region has ever seen. Patients will experience rehab as never before in a boutique-style setting with unparalleled concierge service."

The 65,000 sq. ft. JDT Center features 7 day-a-week in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation, offering guests private suites, many with balconies. Patients will receive treatment in a healing and holistic environment which offers traditional and cutting-edge rehab along with acupuncture, acupressure, massage therapy, indoor aquatherapy pool, sauna, spa, beauty salon, chiropractic services and biofeedback. Specialty programs include orthopedic rehabilitation, stroke rehabilitation and pulmonary rehabilitation.

Some of the most exciting features of the facility are the Japanese healing meditation garden filled with tropical plants and fragrances to soothe the soul and heal the body, as well as the outdoor English garden terrace which provides an environment created to provide tranquility to patients recovering from an accident, surgery or illness.

The JDT Center will be partnering with referring physicians to provide continuity of care to patients. Private rooms with balconies and pull-out sofa beds for guests can be pre-reserved for post-hospital treatment, easing the stress of last minute placement. Rooms are appointed with flat screen televisions, piped-in oxygen, comfortable chairs and private baths.

Their flagship rehabilitation program is called Rehab Road, an indoor area designed to simulate a real neighborhood community with a car, grocery store, restaurant counter, laundry room and tool workshop, lawn and gardening with outdoor shed, golf putting green, living room with Wii station, full kitchen and private bath.

In addition, Eddie's Place, an education and senior community center, will offer informational seminars to members of the community as well as recreation, social programs and wellness education for seniors.

The Jerry & Dolores Turco Medical Rehab Center is located at 503 Pine Brook Road in Lincoln Park, on the campus of The Lincoln Park Healthcare Experience. For more information or a private tour, or to make a referral, please contact Tere Kirk, Marketing Director at (973) 317-7500, ext. 1172.

Rehab center to offer care with flair -- Will also provide tax ratables, jobs

By ELAINE D'AURIZIO / The Record

LINCOLN PARK - The newest addition to a growing local "health campus" is bringing in a lot of green, for both clients seeking soothing rehabilitation and a borough looking for a revenue and employment boost.

When it opens, likely in April, the Jerry and Dolores Turco (JDT) Medical Rehabilitation Center will feature the Atrium Healing Garden, offering the sights, sounds and serenity of an Asian garden.

"It will stimulate the senses through tropical plants," said Mimi Feliciano, who took over the 547-bed Lincoln Park Renaissance Rehab and Nursing Home started 45 years ago by her late parents, Jerry and Dolores Turco. "It will have the ambiance of a spa/hotel, which is unlike any rehabilitation center ever built."

The $13 million center will also be a double asset to Lincoln Park, bringing in at least $100,000 to $150,000 each year in new tax dollars after a pending reassessment, and projecting the hiring of 50 to 75 new workers registered nurses, nurse's aides and therapists.

Other facilities on the so-called health campus off West Pinebrook Road are the Lincoln Park Care Center and Lincoln Park Hospice.

The center is Feliciano's brainchild. When she took over her parents' short and long-term nursing home seven years ago, she asked short-term patients what they wanted during their stay.

"The industry is changing," she said. "I came in with a fresh set of eyes and interviewed people. I learned that short-term or sub-acute patients don't want to be in a nursing home."

Although the center is on land zoned residential, town planners approved the application in December 2007 because "the applicant made a good case as to why it was a good project," said Joseph Maiella, borough administrator and planner. "It served the changing needs of the health industry and was going to bring in people from other towns. It was also with the understanding that they wouldn't increase the number of beds."

That meant making 60 more suites or private rooms, with beds transferred from the nursing home.

"It looks beautiful and is a great addition to the town," said Mayor David Runfeldt. "Some of the services they will provide will be a great advantage to the residents. My understanding is that they are going to open it to other towns. It's a win-win situation."

On the standard medical side, "the rehabilitation center provides complete inpatient and outpatient speech, occupational and physical rehabilitation services," said John Passuth, senior account supervisor and public relations officer. "Therapists will offer residents advanced rehabilitation when recovering from surgery, illness or injury."

On the agenda are community outreach programs to seniors where they can get medical information and socialization, screenings and evaluations. They can even invest in a "bank" where a person gets credit for services to others and can claim that help back when they need it themselves.

Then there are the special refinements: The 65,000-square-foot "state of the art" rehabilitation center will combine Eastern and Western medical practices to create a healing environment.

The short-term or subacute patients who stay in one of the 60 private rooms will be catered to in style, Feliciano said, adding "You're going to feel as if you are in a suite in a five-star hotel. I wanted to give people what they wanted, and what they said they wanted is privacy and to be away from long-term care patients. They don't want to feel as if they are in a nursing home."

Luxury Surroundings May Help Ease the Pain at New Rehab Center in Lincoln Park

by Eugene Paik/For The Star-Ledger

Tuesday June 23, 2009, 7:22 PM

LINCOLN PARK -- With amenities like massages, a Japanese healing garden, a sauna, private suites and a beauty salon, a new rehab center in Lincoln Park is aiming to make life a little easier for patients who have a grueling recovery period ahead of them.

As in any rehab center, simple chores - ironing clothes, shopping for food and planting flowers - are physical challenges for those recovering from physical injuries as they try to ease back into what used to be their daily routines.

But the soon-to-open Jerry and Delores Turco Medical Rehab Center is also offering luxury surroundings, complete with a concierge and day spa, to its patients, according to center officials who offered a preview of the facility today.

"There's really no other place like this," said Toni Loyas, the corporate director of rehabilitation for the center, which is being marketed to baby boomers who want something more than a hospital environment. "You'll be amazed how a simple act becomes difficult when you have crutches."

The centerpiece of the facility is Rehab Road, a simulated neighborhood community which measures more than 2,000 square feet. In it, men and women with walkers can learn to swing a golf club again, practicing their putting around small hole in the front of the room. Patients learning how to unload groceries with a cane can walk over to a Ford Taurus and practice.

The new 65,000-square-feet rehab center is located on the Lincoln Park Healthcare Experience campus, which also features nursing homes, a hospice and another rehabilitation center.

This facility, according to center officials, is the only one of its kind in New Jersey, and they say its amenities distinguish it as one of a handful of pioneers nationwide in luxury rehab centers.

Officials from the state chapter of the National Rehabilitation Association and the New Jersey Hospital Association could not be reached for comment yesterday to verify those claims.

However, some of the scores of invited health-care officials touring the building yesterday were impressed by its opulence.

"I think with people who are 50- to 70-years-old, they're looking for a facility that is like a hotel environment," said Joan Beloff, director of community outreach for Chilton Memorial Hospital.

"The building has all the amenities of a five-star hotel," said Ralph Vitaro, the publisher and president of Drug Delivery Technology magazine. "It's a calming place."

Luxury may be a new trend for rehab centers, say officials at the center, who added that it doesn't accept patients until July 6 but already has seen a demand for rooms.

"People don't want to be somewhere sterile," said Mimi Feliciano, CEO of the center. "Especially the baby boomers - they want something elegant."

That's why Feliciano, the daughter of the late real-estate developer Jerry Turco Sr., spent more than two years on the project, which cost more than $10 million.

"This is what they want," she said. "They want things that are at a different level."

Lincoln Park Healthcare CEO Mimi Feliciano has been named to the board of the Montclair State University’s School of Business. Feliciano is CEO and owner of the Lincoln Park Healthcare facility in Lincoln Park, NJ.

"Mimi is an excellent addition to our board, bringing the knowledge and experience of a successful business woman in a highly competitive field,” said William Turner, Dean of Montclair State University’s School of Business. “We look forward to utilizing her energy, expertise, and business savvy to further our mission for the benefit of our students in the School of Business."

“I am honored to be working with Montclair State University on this level and to help guide one of New Jersey’s finest business schools into the future,” said Feliciano. “The Business School of Montclair State University already has an excellent reputation for being a leader in business education, and I am looking forward to assist in continuing that legacy for years to come.”

This appointment, which began with the start of the spring 2009 semester, continues the already strong relationship between Lincoln Park Healthcare and Montclair State University.

Jerry and Dolores Turco Medical Rehab Center Combines Eastern and Western Medicine for an Extraordinary Healing Environment

The healing process is not only centered on physical wellbeing, but also on emotional wellbeing. We recognize the importance of providing patients with an environment that provides an atmosphere of relaxation, allowing peaceful focus on rehabilitation.

The soon-to-open JDT Medical Rehab Center will feature one of New Jersey’s largest and most unique healing gardens as part of a one-of-a-kind rehabilitation setting that will treat the body, mind and spirit for greater patient care and recovery.

A stimulating blend of Eastern and Western medicine practices will be used to create an extraordinary healing environment for patients, creating an atmosphere that fosters the highest possible standard of patient care available.

The JDT Medical Rehab will have the ambiance of an exclusive spa/hotel, which is unlike any other rehabilitation center ever built: We believe this kind of environment will help patients recover faster so they may return to a more active lifestyle.

At the center of this new 65,000 square foot “state-of-the-art” rehab center is the Atrium Healing Garden, a 2,500 square foot escape into the sights, sounds and serenity of an Asian Garden. It will stimulate the senses through vibrant tropical plants that produce an abundance of oxygen and fragrances, as well as a soothing waterfall. The unique environment will allow patients to be more active in their healing process.

People that take an active role in their rehabilitation generally recover faster.

Our healing garden is designed to be an area where patients can go and experience natural sounds and beauty, which will have a salutary effect on their mental and physical health. Numerous studies have shown the beneficial effects of a holistic approach to healing. Our patients will experience an environment that relaxes the mind and rejuvenates the body.

The indoor healing garden has a unique and fun design. For example, it will have a special walkway made from inlay stone that will wind in a manner that symbolizes a river.

The Atrium healing garden opens up to another beautiful outdoor rooftop terrace garden for patients to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Unique to the area and for rehabilitation facilities, this outdoor setting is going to be more like an English garden with plants that have a wide array of colors and textures, as well as, plants specifically known for their aromatherapy.

Don't Wait To Talk About Hopsice

It's an all too common situation. A family is at the bedside of a loved one who is seriously ill and nearing the end of life. Each member of the family has a different idea of what should be done and what the patient would have wanted.

Far too many people wait until they are in the midst of a health care crisis before thinking about what options are available or what care they or their loved ones would have wanted. Hospice professionals deal with these challenging situations every day - that's what they are trained to do.

When a family is coping with a serious illness and a cure is no longer possible, hospice provides the type of care most people say they want at the end of life: comfort and dignity. Considered to be the model for high-quality, compassionate care for people with a life-limiting illness, hospice care includes expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support. Care is provided by an inter-disciplinary team of professionals and trained volunteers. The wishes of the patient and family are always at the center of care.

Hospice care is paid for by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans and HMOs. That's helpful to the more than 1.4 million people who received care from our nation's hospices last year, according to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.

Hospice providers can help with information about care options and choices and ensure you live as fully as possible throughout your entire life. They will make sure your loved ones receive support as well.

One of the best ways to make sure you and your loved ones benefit fully from hospice, should you ever need this care, is to talk about it before it becomes an issue.
